Managing media

Photos and videos are what make a route come alive. They show people what to expect before they ride.

There are two ways to add photos to a route:

  • Drag and drop — Drag photos anywhere onto the route editor page. A drop zone appears to confirm.
  • Click to upload — In the Photos and Videos section, click the upload area and select files from your device.

You can upload multiple photos at once. Supported formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC.

The cover photo is the one that appears on route cards throughout the site. Tap the star on any photo to make it the cover. The filled star shows which photo is currently selected.

Choose something that captures the feel of the route — a scenic view, a distinctive landmark, or a stretch of path that makes someone want to ride it.

Drag any photo to a new position in the grid. The order you set here is the order they appear in the route’s photo gallery.

Put the most compelling photos first. People browse from left to right — lead with your best shots.

Each photo has a caption field below it. Captions appear in the photo gallery and give viewers context:

  • “The wooden boardwalk through the marsh”
  • “Looking east from the Champlain Bridge”
  • “Coffee stop at the Mill Street Brew Pub”

Captions are optional but helpful, especially for landmarks or notable sections.

Tap the x on any photo to remove it from the route.

  • If you’re a guest or editor, the photo is “parked” — moved to the Nearby Photos panel where it can be re-added later.
  • If you’re an admin, the photo is removed from the route’s media list.

Either way, the original image file is preserved. Nothing is permanently deleted when you remove a photo from a route.

Below the main photo grid, you may see a Nearby Photos panel. This contains photos that are geographically close to your route or photos that were previously parked.

  • Tap the + on any nearby photo to add it to your route.
  • You can also drag photos between the main grid and the Nearby Photos panel.

This is useful when a photo from one route also makes sense on a nearby route.

Upload videos the same way as photos — drag and drop, or use the upload area. Supported formats: MP4, QuickTime (.mov), and WebM, up to 500 MB.

Videos take around ten minutes to process after uploading. A timer counts up so you know it’s working. You can keep editing or leave the page — processing continues in the background, and the editor picks up where it left off when you return.

When processing is done, the video appears in your media grid ready to go.

Each video has a title field. The title shows below the video on the route page, and on community sites it links to a dedicated page for that video.

Pick a title that tells someone what they’re about to watch — “Crossing the Alexandra Bridge” rather than “VID_20250315.”

Videos can be reordered and removed the same way as photos — drag to reorder, tap the x to remove. The same parking behaviour applies: guests and editors park the video, admins remove it from the media list.
